"that was the best night of my entire fucking life!" big red said. "it was so great!" lauren said. big red smiled. "i'm glad i could go with you," he said. "aww.. me too," lauren said. "it's only 2, so the night is still young. why don't we hit a club?" he asked. "why don't we go to fenian's pub? it's this bar in jackson," lauren said. "sounds good. when does it close?" he asked. "i think around 3 and we can head home then. i need a little sleep," she said. "and i think what you're wearing is just perfect," he said. "thanks," she said smiling. "my ass isn't showing is it?" "is that a trick question? either way, no," he said. "well, then, it was a trick question and you just admitted to looking at my ass," lauren said. big red shrugged, "oops."

mellisa's family day..

"Could you slow down, honey?" Mellisa's mom asked. "What?" Mellisa asked, fully aware of what her mom had said. She checked the speedometer. "I'm only going 60. We are on the interstate, Mom," she said. "Just slow down," Pamela, Mellisa's mom said. "Matt and Dad are way up there by now. I'm trying to keep up," Mellisa said. "Don't get pissed off at me, now. We know where we're going. It's not like we need to hurry," Pamela said. Mellisa let off the gas a little and their black Honda Pilot was passed by a red convertible. "We are going so slow. It's driving me crazy," Mellisa said. "Well, speed up then, honey! It's not like you listen to me anyway. I'm wasting my damn breath!" Pamela said. "What are you talking about, Mom? I slowed down. I listen to you; even though your ideas are slightly crazy," Mellisa said. Pamela said nothing. She just gazed out the window. This was how it was. Mrs. Jones could never handle even the slightest little conflict. She cracked and went silent. Mellisa thought about saying something about how she was sorry but she really had no reason and so she decided better of it. "Don't you ever wish we spent more time together?" Pamela asked. Mellisa shrugged. Not really was what she was thinking but she didn't say that. "You're going to be gone in a few months. I'm going to miss you," her mom said. "Mom, I'm going to be in Jackson. It's not like I'm even a hour away," Mellisa said. Pamela thought a second. That was how she was: slow and calculated. "You won't be at home. You won't be there when I need you. You are what has held your father and my marriage together. You keep him from wandering and you keep me from losing my cool. I just don't know what things will be like with you gone," Pamela said. She had tears rolling down her cheeks. "Mom, it'll all be okay. It's not me that's held the marriage together; it's you and Dad. I'll see you all the time. I swear I won't leave you, okay? I know Dad can be an ass, but you'll make it. He's gone most of the time anyway," Mellisa said. "That's just it," Pamela said. Mellisa waited for her to continue. "Your father isn't around half the time. Hell, neither is your brother. It was always me and you. I'm going to miss you like crazy, baby. My life is just not going to be the same without you. You were my glue. You kept me from falling apart when I really wanted to. You are my baby," her mom said. Mellisa didn't know how to respond. Her mom never said things like this. She just didn't like emotions all that much. They terrified her. "You don't see it, do you?" Mellisa asked her. "See what?" Pamela asked. "How strong you are. You don't realize that you can make it, Mom. I love you so much. I know Dad treats you like crap. He's always gone and he cares so much more about his job than he does any of us. Yet when he is home, he acts like he's the best dad in the world," Mellisa said. "It's his way of making up for all the times he's screwed us over," Pamela said. "You're going to be fine, Mom. I know how strong you are. You could survive anything- with or without me," Mellisa said. "Today's going to be great," Pamela said. And like that, their deep conversation was gone-- and probably for forever.

mellisa and jerrett are out at the cafe eating lunch. "oh my god. no way! micheal just walked in," mellisa said. "why don't we go say hi?" he asked. "are you crazy?" she asked. he walked around her to her and pulled her up by the hand and started heading over to micheal. "micheal, hey," mellisa said. "are you two dating?" micheal asked. "no," mellisa said, and at the same time jerrett said, "it's not official." "we're not," mellisa said. jerrett smiled, "not yet, at least." "not at all," mellisa said glaring at jerrett. jerrett shrugged. "so, what are you doing here?" mellisa asked. "eating lunch," micheal said. "oh, same here," mellisa said smiling. "i should go order now," micheal said. on his way to the register, he pushed jerrett. "watch it!" jerrett yelled. "stupid little fucker," jerrett muttered under his breath. mellisa hit his arm. "fuck! what was that for?" jerrett asked. "you had no right to say that crap. we're not dating, especially not now," she said. "what?" jerrett asked, but mellisa had already grabbed her purse and left.

brandon and lauren are at pizza hut. "thank you so much for having lunch with me," lauren said. "it's my pleasure," he said. he took her hand in his. "i love you, lauren." "i love you too, brandon. i really don't know what i ever did to deserve you," she said. "funny," he said. "i think the same thing all the time. lauren smiled. "so, how's school been?" brandon asked. "how's work been?" she asked. "boring," he said. "exactly," she said smiling. "hey, it's not that bad. at least you get summers off," he said. "one joy," she said. he smiled.
